OK, so I went to the declaration yesterday. Please note I went mostly out of curiosity, rather than outright support for Howard Dean. You see, while I believe in elective politics and feel there is quite a bit of merit to the brand of democracy we practice in this country, I have a hard time not questioning any candidate who is running for office. Also, I find the more hard-core Democratic activists who tend to populate such rallies a little bit creepy. As a result, I tend to stick out a bit at those functions — I’m the one who looks stern, like a reporter from The New Republic, only with weirder clothes.
While I didn’t think Dean covered any new ideas in his speech, he did do an effective job of restating his case and his reasons for running for President. By treading familiar ground he probably appeared like a extraordinarily strong candidate to anyone who hadn’t seen him before.
In any event, I’m thinking I have enough material for a longer article and the Dean campaign. Keep alert, because it should be rearing its head in the coming months. The general idea: we’re going to be seeing a different Dean from here on out. And hopefully, that’ll be a good thing.
