My name is Greg Sampson. I live in Montpelier, Vermont, in a house by the Onion River with two roommates. The three of us have three laptop computers, two iPods, a bunch of books, some plants, furniture, lamps, and a nicely stocked kitchen. We also have a lot of other less interesting stuff here that I choose not to mention. You could probably conclude that it is all “the usual” and move on.
I have just over 20 Gigabites of music on my computer—clocking in at 11 and half days—most of which you could catalog under the indie rock ethos.
I’m a 2006 graduate of Vermont Law School, and I passed the Vermont bar exam. You can see my name on this pass list, if you’re interested. So, assuming that there’s no problems with the other parts of my application process (i.e., fitness of character, criminal background check), I should be licensed to practice law in this state sometime in December. That’s quite exciting for me, as you might imagine. Law school was difficult but rewarding, and I hope to soon have a career about which I can say much the same thing. My ideal job would be to represent prisoners, children, and immigrants. It seems that I’ve developed a desire to protect vulnerable people. I try not to let that go to my head.
Now I am looking for work and generally enjoying being in Vermont. Except for a few days in Winter where the temperature drops below zero degrees, it rarely gets boring here. I’ve been developing a good friendship with my roommates and, thanks to the Internet, I’ve been able to stay in relatively good touch with the friends I don’t necessarily see as much as I would like. As you might be able to surmise from this page and my various posts, I’m mostly happy with my life but find I look for more from time to time.
I own a 2006 Surly Cross Check and ride it like crazy. Usually I ride about 20 miles a day, but sometimes more, sometimes less. On days I’m not able to ride at all—because I’m working, travelling, or because of rain—I feel like I’m losing my edge. It’s irrational, I know, and I’m trying to deal with it better. What I would love to find is some sort of mapping software that allows me to keep track of my regular rides and how far I go each day. I think that would give me the sense of accomplishment I’m looking for, and I can look at it on those days when I’m not able to get out there and bike.
This has been my online home since sometime in early 1999 or so. After about a year of false starts and lost posts, I finally started writing content that stuck in February, 2000. Those early posts can be found on a single page called A Severely Edited Month of Unemployment. Fair warning: the page is cryptic, nonsensical, and seems to be riddled with jokes that exactly one person—that is, me—would get. So you have been warned. The posts generally tend to get better as you move forward to the present day. Lately posts have lately fallen under five broad categories: life in Vermont, legal news, photographs, music, and books. I hope you find something you like.
